Did You Know?

Customers frequently ask if the metal sheath (armor) of an intra-building fiber optic cable should be bonded. The short answer is: Yes. Bonding and Grounding – according to local codes, industry standards, and best practices – is a requirement for any structured cabling system. But before we go further, we should clarify the difference between Bonding and Grounding.

According to the NFPA-70 (National Electrical Code):

  • Grounding: Establishing a connection, whether intentional or accidental, between an electrical circuit or equipment and the earth or to some conducting body that serves in place of the earth.
  • Bonding: The permanent joining of metallic parts to form an electrically conductive path that ensures electrical continuity and the capacity to conduct safely any current likely to be imposed.

According to ANSI/TIA-607-E Bonding and Grounding Telecommunications Systems:

  • Cable sheaths (metallic armoring) shall be bonded to the primary to secondary busbar

CommScope has a couple solutions for customer use in a Bonding application.
